George F. Mero found himself on his first tour of duty in the Philippines when WWII was declared. Three and a half years later, he and his comrades were freed. Although he never spoke about the war, his family found his manuscript, POW 529, after his death. Thus began a twenty-year journey to complete a family’s unfinished business.
21 September 1940 - Enlisted at Ft. McDowell, California
4 October 1941- Departed the United States for Foreign Service
7 December 1941 - 7 May 1942 – Serviced in the Philippine Islands
7 May 1942 - Reported Missing in Action
10 May 1942 - Interned as a prisoner of war at Davao Penal, P.I. Colony
16 June 1943 - Reported to mother as prisoner of war

April 1944 - Transported as a prisoner of war from Minadao, P.I. to Japan aboard the “Hell” ships. The voyage took 90 days.
July 1944 - Interned as a prisoner of war at Osaka Prisoner of War Camp #5
13 September 1945 - Manila No. 64 – Recovered at Yokohama
